It is defined as the amount of work done when a force of one newton is applied over a distance of one meter. For context, it takes about one joule of energy to lift a small apple one meter straight up. The unit is named after James Prescott Joule, an English physicist whose work was crucial in establishing the principle of energy conservation and the relationship between heat and mechanical work. In electrical terms, a joule is also the energy dissipated when one ampere of current passes through a resistance of one ohm for one second.
