What is it?
In physics, power is the rate at which work is done or energy is transferred. It is a measure of how quickly energy is converted from one form to another. The standard unit for power is the watt (W), named after the Scottish engineer James Watt. One watt is equivalent to one joule of energy transferred per second. For example, a 100-watt light bulb uses 100 joules of electrical energy every second it is on. A higher power rating means more work can be done in a shorter amount of time. A powerful car engine, for instance, can accelerate a vehicle more quickly than a less powerful one because it does the same amount of work faster. Power can be calculated with the formula: Power = Work / Time.
