Game Archetypes Explained

Ever wonder why so many game characters feel familiar? Discover the concept of archetypes and how they shape the games and heroes we love.
What is it?
In gaming, an archetype is a universally understood model of a character, class, or situation that serves as a template. Think of the valiant Hero, the wise Mentor, or the mischievous Trickster. These are narrative archetypes that provide a foundation for a character's personality and role in the story. Gameplay archetypes are also common, especially in RPGs, and are often referred to as the "holy trinity": the Tank (absorbs damage), the Healer (restores health), and the DPS (deals high damage). These templates give players a familiar starting point for understanding a character's function and abilities within the game world.
Why is it trending?
Archetypes are perpetually relevant in game design, but their creative subversion is currently trending. Developers use them as a shorthand, allowing players to quickly grasp a character's purpose without lengthy tutorials. However, the modern trend is to blend or twist these familiar roles. A healer might also be a formidable damage dealer, or a classic hero might have morally gray motivations. Indie games, in particular, are pushing these boundaries, using archetypal foundations to build unique and memorable characters that surprise players and challenge expectations, keeping the concept fresh and engaging.
How does it affect people?
Archetypes directly impact the player experience by providing clarity and connection. They make complex games more accessible by giving players an intuitive understanding of different playstyles. When choosing a character, players often gravitate towards archetypes that resonate with their own personality or desired fantasy, whether it's being a stoic protector (Tank) or a cunning rogue (DPS). This immediate identification fosters a deeper immersion and a stronger bond with the character, making the player's journey through the game's lore and challenges more personal and rewarding.
